He was born in India in 1903 and he lived just long enough to observe the ponderous effects of two world wars, numerous civil insurrections, political upheaval, and corporate misconduct leading to substantial environmental damage. His early education was subsidized by family friends and his first several years of adult employment were in foreign lands, as a policeman of his colonial government. He learned to dislike his duties as a government enforcer and sometimes stated regret that his country had undertaken policies that had obviously oppressed those under its rule.
